”Kasvu” on sarja, jossa Hurskainen kuvaa uudelleen isänsä 20 vuotta sitten itsestään ja kolmesta pikkusiskostaan ottamia kuvia. Sarja perustuu valokuvan kyvylle ylittää aika ja luoda rinnastuksia. Kuvissa nuoret naiset yrittävät päästä takaisin lapsuuteensa palauttamalla menneen tilanteen, keskinäiset suhteensa ja suhteensa kuvaajaan/katsojaan. Mutta he epäonnistuvat väistämättä – paluu ajassa on mahdoton. Aika alkaa muuttua rinnastuksissa. Menneen ja nykyisen hetken välille jännittyy dialogi – samankaltainen kuin ihmisellä on suhteessa omiin muistoihinsa. Muisto ei ole pysyvä, lopullinen, vaan muuttuu ihmisen muuttuessa. Sarja ”Ei nimeä” jatkaa muiston ja lapsuuden teemoja. Kuviksi muuntuneet (joskus keksityt tai väärät) muistot saavatrinnalleen tekstejä. Sarja pyrkii tuomaan esiin keinoja, joilla teksti ja kuva kertovat muiston tai tarinan; narratiivinen teksti vaikuttaa valokuvaa suoraviivaisemmalta välineeltä, mutta kuitenkin juuri valokuvalla on indeksinen suhde tapahtuneeseen.
In “Growth” Hurskainen re-photographs images that her father took of his four daughters some 20 years ago. The tension of the series resides in the photograph’s ability to cross time and create comparisons. In the images the young women are trying to go back to their childhood by adopting the same position towards each other and the photographer’s/spectator’s gaze. But they unavoidably fail – there is no return in time. When creating parallels, time changes – it feels as if there was a dialogue between the past and the present moment, similar to that between our memories and us. A memory is never static, but changes as we change. The series “No name” also deals with memory and childhood. The visual representations of memories (some of which are invented) are complimented with texts. The series points out towards methods that texts and photographs use to mediate a story/memory. A text seems more straightforward in its narration, and yet it is the photograph that has an indexical relationship to the past.
